Kayakoy was once the Greek town of Karmylassos. When the Greek – Turkish war ended in 1923 the Greeks living in Turkey were repatriated and Kayakoy was abandoned. The remains of the village (hundreds of homes and a few churches) are now an open air museum. National Geographic has recognized Kayakoy Ghost Town as one of the World Top 10 Ghost Towns.
There are numerous small restaurants in Kayakoy where you can try the delicacies of gozleme (turkish pancake) or tandir kebab. Some restaurants give you a BBQ at your table to cook lamb, chicken, beef and vegetables etc yourself.
Russell Crowes film ‘The Water Diviner’ was partly filmed in the ruins of Kayakoy Ghost Town. Louis de Bernières book, Birds Without Wings, is set in a fictional village inspired by Kayakoy.
Kayakoy is a short dolmus ride from Hisaronu. Through Kayakoy is the small beach at Gemiler Bay and worth a short visit.
